Technology does come with several advantages but it also has its downsides, one of which is that it can cause problems in people such as gaming addiction. This problem came as a result of the popularity of interactive or RPG games which are designed to entertain and challenge people are looking for adventures outside the context of real life.
Causes of Game Addiction
Low self esteem- Studies have shown that people who get addicted to games do not value themselves much and they feel as if they do not belong in the real world thus the need to escape into virtual reality. Teenagers who do not have a lot of friends or any discernible social life are more prone to game addiction so parents have to be more vigilant in order prevent the situation from spiraling out of control.
False sense of accomplishment- Those who feel as if they have not proven or achieved anything in their personal lives or careers are more predisposed to developing addiction to video games. Most of the video and online games these days are designed to give players a sense of achievement thereby making them feel a lot better about themselves. Some of the most addictive games involve treasure hunting, quests, and virtual battles which can be won by strategy and cunning.
Effects
Among the most common effects of gaming addiction are dissociative behavior, lack of interest to interact with people in a real life setting, plummeting grades (for kids and teenagers), hostile behavior toward friends and family, skipping meals, lack of sleep, and irritability. Adults are usually more prone to severe addiction to gaming because they do not have parents to tell them off or limit their usage of the internet or other gaming devices. As for kids, they can be saved by their parents through the use of proper discipline methods and close monitoring.
Solutions
Having concerned parents and friends would definitely help get this type of addiction in control. On the part of a gaming addict, it is important to recognize that there is a problem and have the willingness to get better and kick the habit for good.
